Breaking NewsRumour: Tsutomu Matsumoto, a Japanese cryptographer, has developed the "gummy finger" to defeat biometric fingerprint devices. The gelatin fake finger fools fingerprint devices 80% of the time. Fact: "Most devices today use between 16 and 40 minutiae points (TouchStar uses 53) to create a template. It should be noted here that the fingerprint itself is not stored anywhere on the PC or network and creating a fingerprint model from 16-40 minutiae points is virtually impossible. It is virtually impossible for someone to steal your fingerprint even if they have full access to your template on the network or device." "Instituting a Biometrics Credential Management System utilizing the Authentication method (1:1 search) is the most secure method of end user authentication. It is exponentially better than existing password, PIN, token and other knowledge or possession based authentication methods and when implemented properly represents a dramatic improvement in data and facility security." "So why all the noise about the 'defeat of biometrics'?" James Childers, CEO, Biometrics Direct Fact: "While other fingerprint systems, including those using 'live finger detection', are fooled 75 to 100% of the time by a 3D gelatin mould, referred to as the 'gummy finger', the new SecuGen System (as used in TouchStar devices) consistently rejects such a mould" Won Lee, Chief Technical Officer, SecuGen Product Updates (August 2004) TouchStar has always had the capacity for modem communication. Compcrete have taken this one step further for the most remote sites, we can now communicate with the TouchStar device using a cellphone equipped with GPRS capabilities.
